EventFerry › Google Calendar From URL not working
Google Calendar “From URL” not working with Outlook?
If Google Calendar cannot fetch your Outlook calendar, adds an empty calendar, or never shows its events, start by testing the Outlook ICS address. Most failures come from the wrong type of link, an expired publication, or Microsoft 365 sharing restrictions.
Quick fix
Copy the ICS link from Outlook—not the HTML link—and open it in a private browser window. It should download a calendar or show text beginning with BEGIN:VCALENDAR without asking you to sign in. If it does not, publish a new link in Outlook before adding it to Google Calendar again.
What Google's result tells you
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “Could not fetch the URL” | The address is invalid, private, expired, or not an ICS feed | Test the link and publish a new ICS link |
| The calendar is added but empty | The published Outlook calendar is empty, the wrong calendar was selected, or Google has not fetched it yet | Check the source calendar and wait for the first refresh |
| Old events appear but new ones do not | The subscription is delayed or the Outlook link stopped working | Test the link, then review the sync-delay guide |
| It works on the web but not the phone | The calendar is hidden or mobile sync is off | Enable that calendar in the Google Calendar app |
1. Copy Outlook's ICS link, not its HTML link
In Outlook on the web, open Settings › Calendar › Shared calendars. Under Publish a calendar, choose the calendar and sharing detail, then select Publish. Outlook shows an HTML link for viewing a page and an ICS link for subscribing. Google Calendar needs the ICS link.
See the complete instructions for finding an Outlook calendar ICS link.
2. Test whether Google can access the link
Open a private or incognito browser window and paste the ICS link. A valid public feed opens without your Microsoft account. If you see a Microsoft sign-in, an error, or a missing-page response, Google's servers will see the same failure.
3. Check Microsoft 365 external-sharing restrictions
Work and school administrators can disable calendar publishing or restrict how much information leaves the organization. If Publish a calendar is unavailable, ask your IT team whether external calendar publishing is allowed. EventFerry cannot bypass that policy.
Microsoft's Outlook sharing documentation explains these organizational restrictions and the difference between HTML and ICS publishing.
4. Add the link from Google Calendar on a computer
- Open Google Calendar in a desktop browser.
- Next to Other calendars, select the plus sign.
- Choose From URL.
- Paste the tested Outlook ICS link and select Add calendar.
- Return to the calendar view and make sure the new calendar is selected.
Google's official help describes the From URL subscription steps.
5. Replace an Outlook link that stopped working
If the calendar used to work, unpublish and republish it in Outlook, remove the old subscription from Google, and add the newly generated ICS link. Republishing can replace the feed address, leaving Google subscribed to an obsolete URL.
If the link works but updates are slow
Google chooses when to refresh subscribed calendars. A valid connection can still take 24–48 hours to show changes. That is a limitation of the subscription method, not necessarily an error. Read how long Outlook-to-Google synchronization takes and what can be done about it.
Use the same Outlook link without relying on “From URL”
EventFerry checks the published Outlook calendar every 15 minutes and writes events into a dedicated Google calendar through Google's API. It also provides Sync now and reports connection errors instead of leaving you with an unexplained empty calendar.
