EventFerry › Outlook to Google Calendar sync delay
How long does Google Calendar take to sync Outlook?
An Outlook calendar added to Google Calendar by ICS URL may take 24–48 hours to update. Google controls when it fetches the subscription, and Outlook does not have a setting that can make Google refresh it sooner.
Short answer
Microsoft says an Outlook calendar shared to Gmail may update every 24–48 hours. A new meeting, changed time, or cancellation can therefore remain missing from Google Calendar for up to two days even when the connection is working normally.
Why the Outlook-to-Google delay happens
The published Outlook ICS address is a calendar feed, not a live connection. Outlook makes the feed available, but Google Calendar decides when to fetch it. Microsoft documents that Gmail subscriptions may update every 24–48 hours, while some Microsoft-to-Microsoft sharing arrangements refresh more quickly.
See Microsoft's calendar-sharing refresh documentation.
Can you force Google Calendar to refresh Outlook?
No refresh control is available for calendars added with Google's From URL feature. Removing and re-adding the subscription may fetch a current copy, but it also removes the calendar's Google-side display settings and does not make later updates faster.
Importing, subscribing, and direct syncing are different
| Method | What happens | Updates |
|---|---|---|
| Import an ICS file | Copies a snapshot of existing events | Never updates automatically |
| Subscribe with From URL | Google periodically reads the Outlook ICS feed | Often delayed 24–48 hours |
| EventFerry | Reads Outlook and writes to a dedicated Google calendar through the Google API | Every 15 minutes, plus Sync now |
Microsoft confirms that exporting an Outlook calendar creates a static snapshot; exporting is not synchronization.
See the detailed Outlook import versus synchronization guide before uploading another file; repeated imports can leave duplicate or stale events.
When the delay is actually a broken connection
A delay is normal when recent Outlook changes have not arrived. Suspect a broken connection when:
- No Outlook events appeared after 48 hours.
- The published ICS link now returns an error or asks for sign-in.
- You unpublished or republished the Outlook calendar.
- The Google calendar has remained unchanged for several days.
